WEEK 42: LOVE AT FIRST CRY

It's a time to bond and get to know each other as you spend time with your precious bundle of joy.

What's happening to your baby?

Your baby at one week old is usually still curled up in the foetal position that was so comfortable in your womb. Your baby is starting to get to know you so hold your little one close as new-borns are only able to see around 20 to 38cm away. What's happening most at this point is a lot of crying as that's the only way your baby knows how to communicate. Baby can recognise your voice at this stage so all that singing you've done before has come in handy!

What's happening to you?

You're probably very tired keeping up with the demands from your bundle of joy. Take note of how you're feeling emotionally and talk about your feelings with your partner or friends and family. Try to schedule some "me" time so you can recharge. Up to 50 percent of new mums are emotional, anxious, teary and irrational. The rollercoaster of emotions mixed with changing hormones, tiredness, and responsibility can bring on a sudden wave of depression. This should pass but if you feel like your low mood hasn't lifted no matter what you're trying, speak to your doctor about it.
